Why ASARA?
Orchestral composition represents the pinnacle of musical understanding—it requires profound artistic maturity. For years, I have been both fascinated and intimidated by the sheer scale of knowledge required to bring a full orchestral piece to life. It is exactly this challenge that drives my motivation to create ASARA. If BEKO is the definitive jazz quintet statement of my music, ASARA is going to be its full-scale, cinematic orchestral realization.
The Vision & The Partnership
ASARA (the Malagasy season of renewal) is not just adding strings behind a band. Grounded in a friendship that started on our first days at Berklee, Uziel Colón and I are re-writing our entire repertoire as a multi-movement orchestral score bringing Malagasy traditions, Afro-jazz, and Western symphonic scale together as equals.
The Reality
Major classical institutions have multi-million dollar endowments to fund score preparation and rehearsals—we rely on our community. Translating living oral traditions into hundreds of pages of complex orchestral sheet music takes real resources, and if we want these rhythms on global stages, we have to write the score ourselves right now.
